Top Tips for retailers to prevent and reduce crime
  • Wherever possible, avoid creating blind spots. Staff should have a good line of sight. If you do have blind areas, place signage to make them rethink. Security tags are also a deterrent.
  • Convex mirrors can be used above shelves and can also be angled towards blind spots.
  • High end items should be placed in high traffic areas, near tills/check outs is a good place.
  • High end products should be covered by CCTV and away from entrances and exits (unless till/checkout is by the exit).
  • Keep store/shop organised so it is easy to identify missing products. Do not leave boxes of stock unattended, especially near exits.
  • Pro active customer service is key. Eye contact and polite offering to help.
  • Train employees on possible suspicious behaviours such as;  Are people wearing appropriate clothing for the weather? Looking to see where staff is.  Picking up items they are not showing an interest in, looking nervous, checking their watch/bag/touching face, sweating.
  • Join WRCI/Disc to be aware of known offenders and to be kept up to date on who’s out and about.
  • Ban your known offenders.
  • Speak with other stores, discuss what works for them, are there any patterns? Report any thefts to Police.
